Xu Tang was born and raised in Beijing, China. He began playing piano when he was 5. He completed his BMUS Honours in composition with First class honours from the University of Waikato and currently studying for his Master of Music in Composition at the University of Waikato Conservatorium under Dr Martin Lodge. In 2012, 2013 and 2014, Xu was the recipient of the University of Waikato Blues Award for composition.
Xu was award a Lilburn Trust Composition Award First Prize in 2013 for his solo cello piece Remembering Beijing from the University of Waikato. In 2014 he was awarded the Lilburn Trust Composition Award First Prize and performance Prize for his Monodrama piece (for soprano and prepared piano) Lament of Mistress Xiang Lin from the University of Waikato.
