In 2012 Bene won the Senior Composition Award of the Dunedin Branch of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers. He was also awarded an Associate Diploma in Pianoforte Performance by the St. Cecilia School of Music and Solo Seal in Ballet, the highest qualification of the British Ballet Organisation.
In 2013 his NCEA Year 13 painting portfolio toured the country in the Top Art Exhibition, which showcases the top 60 secondary school art portfolios in New Zealand. In 2013 he won the Audrey Reid Composition Competition and came second in the Auckland Youth Orchestra's 65th Anniversary Fanfare Competition.
In 2015 he received a Merit Award in the Lilburn Trust Prize in Composition. He is in his third year at the University of Otago studying Composition and Physical Geography.
